Prioritizing Wildlife Road Crossings in North Carolina

Among the many challenges wildlife face in North Carolina is the risk of death and disruption to habitat connectivity caused by the state’s extensive road network. Collisions between wildlife and vehicles are a constant risk to travelers on North Carolina’s roadways. Wildlife road crossings allow safe passage for wildlife while also reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions.

Wildlands Network conducted a statewide analysis to identify the top 20 highest-priority wildlife crossing sites in North Carolina. In light of increased opportunities and funding sources for wildlife crossing projects, our report serves as a guide to the locations in North Carolina with the greatest need for new wildlife crossings and retrofitting existing infrastructure.
