Rewilding the Prairie

Wildlands Network is rewilding grassland ecosystems in New Mexico and Utah by using cutting-edge deep-learning technology to map prairie dog burrows and identify the best reintroduction sites for ferrets.

We recently partnered with student researchers at Bosque School in Albuquerque, New Mexico to refine our models and continue work to ensure these species—alongside the ecosystems they support—are conserved and protected.

Watch this short film to go to the prairie with this team and discover how we’re merging technology and fieldwork to monitor miles of hidden networks beneath the soil.

Wondering how prairie dogs keep black-footed ferrets alive? Hear more about our grassland rewilding project from Aaron Facka, our senior wildlife biologist, below.
