Analysis of 2022 Budget for Natural Protected Areas

In recent years, the Mexican government has expanded the country's protected areas; in 2016 and 2017, sixty million hectares were added, mostly territorial sea. However, the budget per protected hectare has been reduced by 90%, going from a historic high of 94.35 pesos in 2016 to 9.5 pesos in 2021.

Public resources allocated for Natural Protected Areas (NPA) are essential to strengthen the management of protected areas; boost community participation in the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources; promote the restoration of ecosystems, as well as surveillance, protection and monitoring actions for the conservation and recovery of priority species and their habitats.

The projected federal budget for NPA in 2022 does not guarantee their effective operation and management. The 1.2% budget cut of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) puts the conservation of our natural heritage at risk, as well as the effectiveness of community projects within protected areas.

Learn more about the projected public resources for Conanp in 2022, as well as some recommendations from the NOSSA group to improve the budget for the care of NPA.
