DNA of Wolf Declared Extinct in Wild Lives on in Texas Pack

Our Chief Scientist, Dr. Ron Sutherland, was quoted extensively in an Associated Press article (picked up by Raleigh, North Carolina’s The News and Observer) about the discovery of surprising amounts of red wolf DNA in wild canids in coastal Texas. Time will tell what the implications of this news are for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and their mandate to conserve this extremely imperiled species. Wildlands Network is working hard to make sure they do the right thing!

“From a practical conservation biology standpoint, these animals have special DNA and they deserve to be protected,” [Sutherland] said, explaining that conservation easements that restrict development along parts of the Gulf Coast are an essential first step.
