Dead Bears on the Highway

Both Dr. Liz Hillard, wildlife scientist, and Dr. Ron Sutherland, chief scientist, were featured in this article about bear collisions with vehicles near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where we are conducting GPS collaring studies to monitor wildlife movement across roads. We’re hopeful our data will help inform where wildlife crossings can be built to mitigate the potentially deadly consequences of wildlife-vehicle collisions.

“If we can connect animals into a broader network of habitats, then they are much more likely to survive,” says Sutherland, “especially as more and more people move into Southern Appalachia.”
